Common Questions: FAQ

Entering therapy is a big step for anyone to take.  Most people feel nervous before their first appointment.  The following is intended to give you some information about the therapeutic process.

Why do people seek therapy?

There can be many reasons people may come into therapy.  Psychotherapy is intended to help you resolve problem areas in your life and better manage personal growth, interpersonal relationships, family concerns, and the stress of daily living.   Therapy can provide support, problem-solving skills, stress management, and enhance the ability to cope with issues such as depression, anxiety, lack of confidence, relationship troubles, unresolved childhood issues and grief . The benefits you obtain from therapy depend on how well you use the process and put into practice what you learn.

What should I expect on the first session?

The first session is primarily for clarifying the problem(s), gathering personal and family information, and planning the therapy process, including goal setting.

How long do sessions last?

Sessions are approximately 60 minutes long.

Is therapy confidential?

Anyone entering therapy is probably concerned about confidentiality.  I adhere to the strictest codes of confidentiality.  The therapeutic relationship is ethically and legally a confidential relationship.   However, there are a few exceptions to this rule:

  • Suspected child abuse or dependant adult or elder abuse.  The therapist is required by law to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.

  • If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person.  The therapist must notify the police and inform the intended victim.

  • If a client intends to harm himself or herself.  The therapist will make every effort to enlist their cooperation in insuring their safety.  If they do not cooperate, further measures may be taken without their permission in order to ensure their safety.
